Artique Underground Gallery starts off the New Year with an exhibit of paintings by Diane Santarella,

"STATE OF MIND". This series of abstract paintings explore the graphic, visual experience of meditation, migraines, dreamscapes, and the organization of mental minutiae. Santarella works in mixed media on paper and canvas with a distinct mark that recalls zen calligraphy and graffiti. The resulting paintings are quiet, complex and subtly challenging.

Diane Santarella currently resides in Mount Airy, Maryland. In 2004, Santarella’s work was selected for the Pennsylvania ‚”Art of The State‚” exhibition and hung in the Pennsylvania State Museum in Harrisburg. She was named one of ”Twenty Emerging Artists to Watch” by M. Stephen Doherty, editor-in- chief of American Artist Magazine in 2006. She has recently had solo shows at The Delaplaine in Frederick and The WorkHouse Arts Center in Lorton, Virginia. STATE OF MIND

I observe the process of organizing relationships, tasks, roles, of how to communicate, of prioritizing the endless minutiae of my mind.

While slipping in and out of sleep, managing migraines, I have become familiar with a world of visual phenomena that reveals itself behind my closed eyelids.

Sitting in meditation, I watch rogue thoughts and ego dramas unfold against my quieting mindscape.

For years, I'd watch these visual patterns play on my mental movie screen and now I paint them.

These paintings are a stream of consciousness depiction of various STATES OF MIND.
